May I reuse QR codes when disposing materials?

This is a tip on how you may save your QR stickers when throwing materials that may not be used anymore.

QR codes are the key to connecting your physical belongings to their digital profiles (material cards). They secure traceability and easy access to digital information during the object's lifetime.

However, sometimes, belongings have to be thrown away. Either there is no one else to take care of them, or they have outdone their service period.

In that regards, what happens to the QR stickers attached?

Well, if the digital material is deleted while the QR sticker is still attached, then that QR code cannot be used anymore and will have to follow the object in the waste container.

But, there might be a way to secure the code and sticker to save some more money and environmental footprint (other than reusing the objects themselves).

These are the steps to be done:

  1. Before throwing the object, ensure to detach the sticker in the most gentle way possible.
  2. If possible, attach it directly to a new physical object that has no codes attached yet.
  3. Go then into the digital material card that you want to delete and enter the "items" tab
  4. Find the item line with the same QR code as you have detached.
  5. Go to the right on the line and enter edit data.
  6. Remove the QR code and then click save.
  7. If the item is the only item to the digital material, or you have done the described steps to all items on the material card, you may now remove it from Inventory
  8. If only some (or one) items are relevant, then delete the relevant item line(s).
  9. Go then to the next material card to which the stickers are supposed to be attached.
  10. Create a new item and insert the QR code by text. Read it from your sticker that you hold.
  11. And that's it! You can use your QR scanner to control-check that the correct digital material responds when scanning the code.
